Balance

As a teenage athlete, it can be a real challenge to balance academics and training. On the one hand, you have school work and tests that demand your attention, and on the other hand, you have practice and competitions that require your time and energy.  The pressure to perform well in school and in your sport can be overwhelming, and it can be difficult to find a balance between the two. This can lead to feelings of burnout and fatigue, which can negatively impact both your academic and athletic performance.

Despite these challenges, it is possible to balance academics and training as a teenage athlete. One way to do this is to create a schedule that prioritizes three key elements:
  1. Study
  2. Training
  3. Rest/recovery
Giving equal importance to each of these can be the hardest part.  Hard-driving perfectionists may skimp on rest, increasing their chances of injury.  Students that struggle academically may avoid their work, exacerbating their challenges and hurting their chances of university admission.  Those that neglect their training may be left behind by the competition.

This means setting aside specific times for schoolwork and specific times for training, and making sure that you have enough time to rest and recover.   Creating a visual schedule, like the one below, can really help if you want to meet specific targets with your study, training, and recovery goals.

This example is based on a student with afternoons free from academic instruction, but it can be adjusted to reflect your schedule.
Another way to balance academics and training is to communicate with your teachers and coaches, and let them know what your commitments are. This will help them understand your situation and make adjustments to accommodate your needs.

Balancing academics and training
as a teenage athlete can be difficult, but with a good schedule, a focus on rest and recovery, and open communication with teachers and coaches, it is possible to succeed in both. The key is to be organized and prioritize your time to achieve a balance that works for you. Remember, it’s important to set realistic goals and not to put too much pressure on yourself. The goal should be to find a balance that allows you to excel in both academics and sports, while maintaining your physical and mental well-being.
